Prophets keep the saints on track with God’s vision for his church; but when the people stop listening to God’s Spirit, prophets are often God’s last resort.

In my continuing studies on the function of prophets, I want to finish off talking about true prophets and how to recognize them. An angel in the book of Revelation summed up what the essence of prophecy is:

And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. (Revelation 19:10).

I believe this means that all prophecy of God should testify of Jesus in someway and we should judge all prophecies by asking these questions:

  • Does it speak of repentance of sin and restoration through the blood of Jesus?
  • Does it strengthen the faith of the hearer in Jesus?
  • Does it lead to the glorification of Jesus?

So, with the essence of prophecy understood and my continued studies, I’ve created a sum of what I’ve learned:

Duties of a true prophet:

  • Perfect the saints to do the work of ministry (Eph 4:11).
  • Foretell of danger, blessing and direction.
  • Keep the people of God in his will (locally or globally).
  • Prophets are second to apostles in the church of God (1 Cor 12:28).

All of these duties don’t apply to all prophets because there are different kinds.

Commonalities among true prophets:

  • They were faithful, blameless and humble men (Gen 6:9).
  • Most were men but some were women (Acts 21:9).
  • Their prophecies came true. They didn’t prophecy falsely.
  • Some performed signs and wonders (2 Kings 1:10).
  • Some had to demonstrate visual examples of how God felt (prophet Hosea).
  • The spirit of Jezebel hates the prophets of God.
  • Most people didn’t like prophets because of their message.
  • Jesus said, “a prophet has no respect in his hometown” (Matt 13:57).
  • Most prophets were killed by false Christians, religious people, and so-called followers of God.
  • They were able to overcome false prophets (1 Kings 18:40; Acts 13:9-11).
  • They came to tear down, replace, and build up things within God’s people (Jer 1:10).

Their messages had these specifics:

  • God is merciful.
  • God is brokenhearted over sin.
  • God is jealous and will not share his glory.
  • God wants your faith and obedience in him.
  • God will turn your captivity into freedom, if you repent.
  • God will bring victory over the enemy, if you repent.
  • God wants justice to be carried out for those who’ve been wronged.
  • God wants you to care for the widows and the orphans.
  • God wants you to serve him and him alone — no other gods.
  • God hates divorce and “unequally yoked” marriages.
  • God hates false pastors and prophets.
  • God hates arrogance.
  • God hates witchcraft and rebellion.
  • God desires holiness.
  • God will heal, restore and deliver you, if you repent.
  • God’s judgement is certain for the unrepentant.

As I studied the prophets of old, I see that many of the proclaimed prophets of today don’t have the heart of God. All they speak is blessings, they lead people astray, and their desire is to please men rather than God.

I believe many of the proclaimed prophets who are truly born again have not been given a true understanding of their gift and function. Many of these don’t have other prophets around them to test and judge what they’re hearing, and as I said before, there is currently a lack of administrative prophets to further govern prophets in the body of Christ.

For the rest of the prophets out there, they’re plain old sorcery-working witches and warlocks. They’re modern day Baalam’s and Elymas’ — men and women who are in it for the money and control as they consult demons for information instead of the true God. These men, and especially these false prophetesses, are causing great damage and harm to believers.

Many Christians are defeated, broken and all they need is a true word from God’s prophets and they’d be set free. God is not pleased with all the divorce in the churches, the idolatry, the mixing with the secular, the injustice, the manipulation of the orphans and widows, the arrogance, the rebellion and the downright unbelief and disobedience. Judgement is coming if the people of God don’t repent.

True prophets are sent because God loves his people enough to keep exhorting them to repent even though they’ve stopped listening to his Spirit and his Word. Prophets are God’s last resort before he takes action.

God’s grace and mercy continues.
