Are You Still Saved? The Myth of Eternal Security

⏱ 8 min read

Many believers in the modern institutional church rest on the dangerous theology of "Once Saved, Always Saved." But what happens when we look closely at the Scriptures? Are you still saved if you continue in willful sin? Let's uncover the truth.

The False Comfort of Eternal Security

One of the most damaging lies propagated from the pulpit today is the idea that a single prayer secures your eternal destination, regardless of how you live the rest of your life. This doctrine tells people that they can engage in the sins of the flesh, live like the world, and still possess the Holy Spirit. This is a deception.

If we examine the letters of Paul, Peter, and James, we see a consistent theme: salvation is a journey that requires endurance, obedience, and continuous faith. It is not a license to sin. When a person believes they are "still saved" despite a lifestyle of unrepentance, they are walking on a very dangerous path.

Biblical Warnings Against Falling Away

The scriptures provide stern warnings for those who have tasted the goodness of God and then return to their old ways.

"For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries." (Hebrews 10:26-27)

This verse clearly illustrates that willful, continuous sin removes us from the covering of Christ's sacrifice. We cannot mock God. A tree is known by its fruit, and a life devoid of spiritual fruit is evidence of a dead faith.

Working Out Your Salvation

Paul exhorts the Philippians to "work out your own salvation with fear and trembling" (Phil 2:12). This does not mean we earn our salvation through works, but it means that genuine faith will inevitably produce obedience. If your faith is not changing your desires, your habits, and your love for the truth, you must ask yourself: were you ever truly saved to begin with, and are you still saved today?
