[Intro]
(Turn the lights on)

[Verse 1]
Every night I rush to my bed
With hopes that maybe I'll get a chance to see you
When I close my eyes, I'm going out of my head
Lost in a fairytale, can you hold my hands and be my guide?

[Pre-Chorus]
Clouds filled with stars cover your skies
And I hope it rains; you're the perfect lullaby
What kind of dream is this?

[Chorus]
You could be a sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare
Either way I, don't wanna wake up from you
(Turn the lights on)
Sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare
Somebody pinch me, your love's too good to be true
(Turn the lights on)
My guilty pleasure, I ain't going nowhere
Baby, 'long as you're here, I'll be floating on air
'Cause you're mine
You can be a sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare
Either way I, don't wanna wake up from you
(Turn the lights on)
[Verse 2]
I mention you when I say my prayers
I wrap you around all of my thoughts
Boy, you're my temporary high
I wish that when I wake up you're there
To wrap your arms around me for real
And tell me you'll stay by my side

[Pre-Chorus]
Clouds filled with stars cover the skies (Cover the skies)
And I hope it rains; you're the perfect lullaby
What kind of dream is this?

[Chorus]
You could be a sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare
Either way I, don't wanna wake up from you
(Turn the lights on)
Sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare
Somebody pinch me, your love's too good to be true
(Turn the lights on)
My guilty pleasure, I ain't going nowhere
Baby, 'long as you're here, I'll be floating on air
'Cause you're mine
You can be a sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare
Either way I, don't wanna wake up from you
(Turn the lights on)
[Bridge]
Tattoo your name across my heart
So it will remain
Not even death could make us part
What kind of dream is this?

[Chorus]
You could be a sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare
Either way I, don't wanna wake up from you
(Turn the lights on)
Sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare
Somebody pinch me, your love's too good to be true
(Turn the lights on)
My guilty pleasure, I ain't going nowhere
Baby, 'long as you're here, I'll be floating on air
'Cause you're mine
You can be a sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare
Either way I, don't wanna wake up from you
(Turn the lights on)
Either way I, don't wanna wake up from you

Beyoncé says “Sweet Dreams” is about “a relationship that seems too good to be true. You don’t know if it’s a sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare.” This song was the sixth single from I Am…Sasha Fierce, replacing “Broken-Hearted Girl”.

This song was leaked before the album’s release under the working title “Beautiful Nightmare”, showing up on the internet a day after being recorded – the first time a Beyoncé song ever leaked. A leak that far in advance of an album release often puts the song in serious jeopardy of being excluded from the final track list. “I was more concerned that she would feel that we did it,” Rico said to MTV News of the leak. “A lot of times producers or songwriters leak records because they feel if you put the song out there it would go. But it was frustrating. I felt like you work hard to get in the studio to work with Beyoncé. I was blessed and fortunate to have four songs on that album… I wasn’t that distraught. I have faith in God.”

The high-fashion music video was directed by Adria Petty and shot in Brooklyn, New York. The gold robot suit Beyoncé wears in the clip was designed by French fashion designer Thierry Mugler.

Rico Love recalled to MTV News working on this song: “Aw man, that was the experience of a lifetime working with one of the greatest vocalists of all time. She came in and cut the song in a hour. She had to go. Jay-Z was opening up the tour with Mary J. Blige and B came in. She wasn’t prepared to record, but heard the song and said, ‘Let’s do it.’ It’s actually my background vocals in the hook. She liked the way it sounded so we kept it.”

A notable “cover” of the song was made by basketball superstar Shaquille O'Neal.
