You’ll hear two opposing arguments about apostle Paul 1) He wasn’t a real apostle or 2) you can’t understand his teachings; this article disproves both.
Was apostle Paul anti-Christ? Some say so because he supposedly contradicted Jesus who “came not to do away with the Law, but to fulfill it” (Matthew 5:17). Paul, after Jesus’ ascension, said, “When you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses” (Galatians 5:18 NLT).
This seems like a contradiction but it’s not. Reading Paul’s writings in context, in humility, and with the help of the Holy Spirit gives us the understanding that the Law was for the wicked but walking in the Spirit fulfills the Law. A whole sermon was dedicated to understanding the Law vs the Spirit.
The real reason people attack Paul’s apostleship and say his writings are hard to understand is because his comments contradict their false doctrines. The don’t want to submit to the Holy Spirit in order to please God. They’re ignorance and pride blinds them to the truth of freedom and power in Christ.
But was Paul a real apostle?
Of course he was. Apostle Peter validates Paul as a brother in the faith and says his writings are apart of the Holy Scriptures:
And remember, our Lord’s patience gives people time to be saved. This is what our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you with the wisdom God gave him—Some of his comments [Paul] are hard to understand, and those who are ignorant and unstable have twisted his letters to mean something quite different, just as they do with other parts of Scripture. And this will result in their destruction (1 Peter 3:15-16 NLT).
Understanding Paul’s writings
Apostle Peter continues in verse 16 about the difficulty of Paul’s writings:
Some of his comments [Paul] are hard to understand, and those who are ignorant and unstable have twisted his letters to mean something quite different, just as they do with other parts of Scripture. And this will result in their destruction (2 Peter 3:16 NLT).
Apostle Peter said that Paul’s writings can be hard to understand by those who are ignorant and unstable. With a little context, we now see why some people can’t understand Paul’s letters.
Responding to people who claim YOU can’t understand Paul’s writings
All Scripture is inspired by God (2 Timothy 3:16-17). While men wrote it down, the words came directly from God’s Spirit. Here’s what the Bible says about understanding the Holy Scriptures:
People who aren’t spiritual can’t receive these truths from God’s Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can’t understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means. (1 Cor 2:14 NLT)
Anyone can understand Paul’s writings or any other scripture in the Bible if they are walking in the Holy Spirit. If a person doesn’t have the Spirit of God, they’re bound to misunderstand the Scriptures—it’s just that simple.
Don’t let anyone deceive you into believing you can’t understand Paul’s writings or that he was a false apostle. Paul was a branch of God, anyone who disagrees with his writings disagrees with God.
