People seldom ask what being close to God looks and feels like. Here’s what experience and the Bible has to say.
In this sermon, we cover what intimacy or closeness to God is: how it feels, what it looks like, and why some people choose alternative ways to “experience” to God. The scriptures we covered:
Obedience is love to God
15 If ye love me, keep my commandments. 21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? 23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him (John 14:15, 21-23).
God draws close to those who obey him
- Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven (Matthew 7:21).
- And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God and do it (Luke 8:21).
- Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth (John 9:31).
Seeking a physical visitation from Jesus
The scriptures are clear about a believer’s relationship with God: it’s one in spirit and through the Holy Spirit. The only reason why a believer is asking for a visitation from God is because they’re in their flesh.
They feel alone and far from God, but they want a physical representation to visit them for comfort. But if they were in the Spirit of God, they wouldn’t need that.
So God doesn’t need to make them feel comfortable, it’s that they need to connect with God the right way–in the Spirit, and in faith—and get out of their flesh. When they do that, God will feel more “close” than ever.
God is clear on how he will interface with his children. Any other way could eventually open a door for a demon to masquerade as Christ.

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (Heb 11:1).
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him (Heb 11:6).
23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:23-24).
38 Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee. 39 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas… (Matt 12:38-39)
