What’s the real name of Jesus: Jesus, Yeshua, or Yahushua?

You’ve probably heard that the 1611 version of the Kings James bible references the name of Jesus as Iesus; or that the letter J has only been in use for about 400 to 500 years. You may have read that calling the Son of God “Jesus” is really calling on the false god Zeus which is Satan himself.

I’ve heard the research and arguments before and I know that some of it is probably accurate. Because of this, people are now calling the son of God by his, supposedly, real name which could be:

Yeshua, or Yahushua, or Yahushua Ha Mashiach.

But none of these groups can seem to agree on the correct spelling and pronunciation.

Since the early days of this ministry, “sacred namers” have attempted to post articles in my comment section (completely unrelated to the article), or email me with the intent on debating this issue.

These people act as if it’s a sin to use the name Jesus. With the Black Hebrew Israelite awakening, the topic has resurfaced and I continue to get inquiries about it. What is the Son of God’s real name?

My relationship with God

Frankly, I haven’t gone too deep into research about this issue simply because I haven’t been led to do so. I know Jesus and talk to him quite a bit and he’s hasn’t rebuked me for calling him Jesus. When relating to a holy God, you can bet he’s going to make sure you know about something that offends him, but I haven’t received any conviction about his name, therefore I continue to use the name: Jesus.

From personal experience, I continue to receive revelation through the name of Jesus. I continue to be saved in the name of Jesus. I’ve called on the name of Jesus and seen demons cast out.

Right standing with Christ
Actually, casting out demons in the name of Jesus is really about the authority one has in Christ due to their right standing with him. This is what releases the power to disperse demons, not a name.

I remember the account of the seven sons of Sceva who tried to cast a devil out of a man in the name of Jesus, but because they weren’t in right standing with God, the seven of them were defeated (Acts 19:11-20). So it’s not about the use of a proper name, but right standing in Christ.

The truth about the name of Jesus

In just reading the bible one can see that apart from a formal name, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit all go by many other names to describe their character. So this issue of the proper name of the Triune God is purely semantics and the legalism of men.

Also, the name of God is pronounced and written differently across languages and nationalities. Therefore there is no one set pronunciation or spelling of his name, and so it’s not like you’re in sin, or that you’re calling on a false god if you use the name of Jesus.

My counsel is to quit listening to men and ask God directly, “What do you want me to call you?” Whatever you’re convicted to call him, call him. But don’t go telling other people they’re in trouble for using the name “Jesus” or some other variation you don’t agree with.

What’s most important

What’s most important is whether or not you’re obeying the person behind the name. People are too focused on what men are saying about semantics, rather than pleasing the Christ.

Did Jesus ask people to believe in his name only, or who he is? It’s not about knowing the correct pronunciation of his formal name but the person behind it. Knowing him, in his nature and characteristics, and obeying him is what saves us!

The real issue

Some say, God is just giving people like me a grace pass because of our ignorance, and that he does require the use of his proper name once we know it. No, he doesn’t.

If he was truly about a specific name, it would be declared and very clear in scripture yet he uses dozens of names to describe himself in scripture.

He’s not about a name, but rather making sure you understand his character so that you can become like him (Romans 8:29).

This is not to say you can call God whatever you want, just follow your bible’s translation and go with that.

This sacred name movement is an avenue toward more “hidden truths.” Once a person starts using a new name, some stop there, but for others, they keep going. Because of this “revelation,” they’ve become more susceptible to accept other “revealed truths” that come their way like: other hidden books of the Bible or whether God is really a woman.

These movements lead down the rabbit hole to gnosticism which is the pursuit of the hidden knowledge of God, rather than the love of God himself. The end is deception. Before one knows it, they’ve received a revelation that the New Testament is entirely false!

This is where I see the sacred name movement going, however, I’m not against anyone using the name they feel convicted to use. Do so, but don’t make it someone else’s burden.

In Conclusion

It’s not about the pronunciation, spelling, whether or not a “J” should be there. Use whatever name you’re convicted to use and don’t make a religion out of it. Ultimately it’s about knowing Christ and obeying him.

He knows who you’re talking to if you call on him with the right intentions. And since I don’t have any conviction from the Son of God himself on some other name, I’ll stick with “Jesus.”

Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. ¹² Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved (Acts 4:10,12).
