The blood of Jesus is the very soul of Jesus that cleanses our sins when we confess.
Nobody ever told me what the blood of Jesus was and why it washed away by sin—it was just necessary and I just believed it (Mat 26:28, Eph 1:7, Col 1:14). My thoughts about the blood were, “Why blood? Why not something else? Why was blood so significant?” We’ll, about 4 years ago, I finally understood the blood after a preacher read this verse of scripture:
Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death, And He was numbered with the transgressors, And He bore the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors (Isaiah 53:12 NKJV).
We all know this is a prophecy about Jesus because it’s confirmed in the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. What sticks out, though, is this portion, “He poured out his soul unto death.” We know that Jesus’ blood was poured out (John 19:34), but here it was referring to the blood as “his soul.” So, what the bible was doing was giving us a revelation into what the blood of Jesus’ consisted of—his very soul.
I would also go to say that all blood consists of the soul of that being—human and animal. This is why God commands us not to eat the blood of an animal (Deuteronomy 12:23), you would be basically ingesting the soul/life force of that creature.
Now it had all come together for me: Our souls are contaminated with sin, but Jesus’ soul, of course, is not. Therefore through the confession of our sins, his blood or soul is applied to our soul and the sin is washed away (1 John 1:9).
The thought of the physical blood initially threw me off, but it’s what’s in the blood that does the work. As we repent and confess our sins, God applies Jesus’ soul and life to our very souls and we are cleansed.
… Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father—to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen (Revelation 1:4-6)
