A study of the book of Proverbs chapter three verses five through seven.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths (vs 5-6).
This is a popular scripture but many don’t really follow it. This means we can have knowledge but not have the correct understanding of it. How many times have we thought we understood something but we were completely wrong. I used to believe the doctrine of Eternal Security was valid until the Lord showed me that I was wrong. To lean not to our own understanding means we have to come to God with what we think we understand.
This means we have to have a consistent, active, relationship with God and be as humble as a child. Children are always asking their parents questions because they don’t understand. But a proud adult won’t ask and will pretend to understand when they have no clue.
It’s hard for proud adults to consult God because as they grew in age, they were told to figure things out on their own. After many years of this, they became proud, and now, they think they are suppose to know everything. So, to ask questions and consult God is difficult because it shows that they don’t understand. They are like that child, which, in their eyes, makes them look weak, naive and foolish. And this is totally true, everyone is a fool compared to God, this is why we need his wisdom. So, let’s not allow pride to block us from getting a good understanding of what we think we know. To consult God is wise.
Trusting His Understanding
At this point, we must trust in the understanding that he gives whether we like it or not. But his understanding is hard to believe sometimes. Many Christians who’ve come out of the harlot church were given an understanding that was crazy. To understand that the Church of God is really not the Church, but a false representation of it set up by Satan; and this church is really a place used by God to separate the fake from the real as the real move away from it to seek the true God is a crazy understanding!
In other words, mainstream Christianity is a false religion like Catholicism, Hinduism, the Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormonism and Islam! But look at all the people who stay in it, trusting in their own judgment, and rejecting the counsel of God. They don’t even consult him. They know about the sin around them, the false doctrines, the lack of love and lean to their own understanding that says, “This is normal.” What goes on in mainstream Christianity is not normal for a church of a holy God!
Therefore, in everything, we must acknowledge him because he is wise and the rightful person who can direct our paths. In the CEV, it says, “And he will clear the road for you to follow.” So, to lean to our own understanding is like driving down a road with obstacles in the way, but with God in front of us, he clears the road. Nice.
Don’t ever think that you are wise enough,
but respect the LORD and stay away from evil (vs 7 CEV)
Thinking that you’re wise enough is, alone, complete disrespect to God for two reasons:
- The wisdom that we have came from God (as learned in chapter two)
- To think this way says that you don’t need God because you are as wise as him. Oh how often do we operate in this mindset.
As the proverb implies, to continue in this route will surely lead to sin (evil). I think about Lucifer and how he became Satan. He leaned to his own understanding, but he didn’t have the correct understanding. Knowing that he was beautiful, powerful and gifted, he came to the understanding that he should be worshiped and praised and not God. But God deserves all the praise, worship and glory – no one else. God originated everything and everyone. Everything is reliant upon him. He is the source of life..
To break away from the source of fulfillment and identity and to try and be your own god is just plain stupid. On top of that, this person has no power to create, and their very existence is dependent on the God they hate. To make matters even worse, this person assaults this God who has the power to turn their spirit into a passing, fart fume and their blood into cherry coca-cola. This is just plain stupid. This is foolish. But this is Satan, and this is us.
We act this way because the devil’s nature is in us. We’re defective just as he is. We think we’re wise enough and we don’t need God. When we think this way, we must catch ourselves and acknowledge that we are just animated dirt. It’s plain stupid to believe we know what will happen tomorrow, what will meet us around the corner, or if we’ll even be alive a few hours from now!
What we think we understand must be brought to God for confirmation, and we should be prepared to accept the fact that we may be wrong. And then we must accept his understanding no matter how we feel about it. We have to continue to believe that we are not wise enough. This keeps us humble and connected to God. To detach from him and go with our own understanding is a sure way to fail. Satan is our example. Our wisdom comes from God and we can never have enough of it.
