In this sermon, we go over two sets of passages that instruct women how to love their husbands. These are the bare minimum a woman is to perform if she is to be considered a good wife.

It turns out the older women I overheard were right about how to keep a man. Warning: vulgarity ahead. They used to say, “Make sure you feed him, and f*ck him,” and look good while doing it. These are the base operations of a wife to her husband.

A good wife will help her husband

Genesis 2:18, 21-23 explains the original reason women were created:

18 And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him…

21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;

22 And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.

23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man (Genesis 2:18, 21-23).

What does Help mean?

The King James Dictionary defines Help as:
To aid; to assist; to lend strength or means towards effecting a purpose; as, to help a man in his work, in children, in ministry etc.

There are two areas a wife can provide assistance in:

  • Domestic duties: meal prep, house maintenance, child nurturing, and sex*
  • Business support: specific roles in her patriarch’s business

* A man’s sexual pleasure is essential to a healthy marriage. Proverbs 5:19 says, “Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.” 1 Corinthians 7:2 says, “Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.”

How should this help be carried out?

Should a wife just decide how she’ll help her husband, without his permission? No. Being that he dominates and rules the home, she performs her duties as her husband commands. And as she learns the patterns of her husband, she performs her duties by anticipation, intuition, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Of course, everything must be done in submission, as discussed in a previous sermon. Submission is cooperation and obedience without complaining and arguing.

A good wife will glorify her husband

The second thing a good wife does is bring glory to her husband. 1 Corinthians 11:7-9 explains further:

7 For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.

8 For the man is not of the woman: but the woman of the man. 9 Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man (1 Corinthians 11:7-9).

Glorify is defined as the following:

  1. To praise; to magnify and honor
  2. To exalt to happiness
  3. To praise; to honor; to extol

While a wife can bring glory to her husband by verbally praising him, she can better honor him with her actions. The greatest way is through her beauty.

A wife who maintains her beauty brings glory to her husband. Keeping her hair long, her body in shape, smelling good, and dressing well brings honor to her husband and makes him happy.

When men and women see a wife who is helpful, respecful, submissive, cooperative, and beautiful, it’s like a crown on a man’s head.

Unfortunately, in a gynocentric society, anything a woman does for the expressed pleasure of a man is seen as wrong. While culture says one thing about wifehood, God says another. It’s important that husbands and wives follow their creation roles for a successful marriage.
