In this sermon, I’m going to show you what agape love should and shouldn’t look like in a marriage, and how to restore and maintain it.

Agape love is not based in emotions or biology like the other four kinds of love, it’s a decision to treat people the way you want to be treated. Agape love is a godly love. You must be born again and walk in the Spirit to have agape love (Galatians 5:19-26). Here are 7 of 14 attributes of agape love found in First Corinthians chapter 13:

  • Love is patient
  • Love is kind (sympathetic and understanding)
  • Love doesn’t envy
  • Love doesn’t boast or brag
  • Love isn’t proud but humble
  • Love doesn’t behave unseemly
  • Love isn’t selfish

In order to have agape love, you must repent of your sins and admit your failure to love like God. You cannot express godly love consistently in your own strength. Next, you must ask the Holy Spirit for his power to enable you to love like God and then you’ll be successful at loving your spouse and others as God intended. When both spouses have the love of God, they’ll have harmony, peace, and a healthy marriage.
