Here are the top ten things some pastors lie about in modern day Christianity; this is the beginning of a new series called “Church Detox.”
This is an introduction to another series I’m calling “Church Detox.” Many of us have been polluted by toxic teaching and it’s hindering growth with our heavenly father.
There were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction (2 Peter 2:1).
This series will expose the truth about many things we’ve heard from mainstream Christian pulpits (Ephesians 5:11). Does what you’ve always known to be true align with the Bible?
Here are the top ten things some pastors lie about whether by omission or half-truth. The goal is to wake up believers and encourage teachers to review what they believe and preach.
1. Some pastors lie about the Gospel.
The message often focuses too heavily on what Jesus did for us but not what we must do in exchange for salvation and that is confession and repentance. Without confession and repentance, there is no forgiveness and cleansing of our sins (1 John 1:9).
2. Some pastors lie about how to please God.
Regular attendance, tithing, and participation in church activities don’t please God. The truth is: Only faith pleases God and faith leads to obedience (Hebrews 11:6,8). Our good works don’t please him neither do our righteousness–it’s like filthy rags (Ephesians 2:8-10; Isaiah 64:6).
3. Some pastors lie about faith.
The truth is: Putting your faith in anything other than the word of God is a recipe for disappointment, being led astray, and destroying your hope. Faith in God always produces evidence (Hebrews 11:1).
4. Some pastors lie about your eternal security.
You’ve heard it called “Once Saved Always Saved” and “Calvinism.” The truth is: Jesus said some saints will be rejected because they continued to practice sin (Matthew 7:22-). The Bible warns saints about the deception of practicing sin and expecting to inherit God’s kingdom (1 Corinthians 6:9,10).
5. Some pastors lie about tithing.
The truth is: Tithing was a governmental tax for the Hebrews to support the tribe of Levi who didn’t work because they managed the blood sacrifices for the rest of the tribes. Tithing is no longer valid today because Israel is scattered and the world is under the New Covenant which doesn’t require blood sacrifices nor a physical priest to speak to God. Pastors shouldn’t twist scriptures to manipulate people to pay for their living and building expenses.
6. Some pastors lie about what the Holy Spirit looks like.
You’ve been told that the evidence of being born again is speaking in tongues. This is partially false. The truth is: Tongues is one of nine gifts from the Spirit and everyone isn’t given this gift. Therefore, you can’t view the gift of tongues as evidence. The real evidence of the Spirit is seen in the fruit: love, joy, peace, patient, self-control, etc (Galatians 5:22-23). Also, holy laughter, being “slain in the Spirit,” and other “manifestations” are not from the Holy Spirit.
7. Some pastors lie about the purpose of fellowship.
You’ve heard it said, “Don’t forsake the assembly of the brethren…” The truth is, Hebrews 10:23-26 reveals what healthy fellowship looks like. The assembly must be a place of love, good works, and encouragement. If your church doesn’t meet those three criteria, you don’t belong there. It’s not a fellowship of God.
8. Some pastors lie about church leadership.
The truth is: there should be no women pastors. And a pastor, bishop, overseer, and elder are all the same position. A church must have multiple elders for accountability sake. Leadership must meet the strict criteria in the Bible or step down. There is no hierarchy on the administrative gifts only an order of operation. For example, an apostle isn’t above a pastor. Lastly, the leaders are servants to the people, not the other way around.
9. Some pastors lie about how to pray.
We’ve heard repetitious prayers and asking God for things outside of his will. Jesus told us how to pray and we need to follow his example.
10. Some pastors lie about Bible study.
Some leaders only want you to accept what they say rather than studying for yourself. Some say you can’t understand the Bible without knowing Greek, Aramaic, and Hebrew. The truth is: you need to study for yourself or you’ll be deceived. All you need is humility, honesty, and the Holy Spirit to understand the Bible.

Hello sir. I’m almost saddened by your choice of title; not that you care I know but even the tone is laced with a tad bit of, unfortunately,
seeping, partially veiled bitterness. This may sound like I’m being harsh I honestly am not trying to be, just direct and only because I know you can take it. You are one of the good guys, why the sharp edge towards His shepherds? Bitterness simple. Do you honestly think you are 100% spot on with the way you feel about them and you are perfectly aligned with the mind of God concerning them? Knowledge puffs to pride and presumption my brother. We need you. Love.
Jeff, may the Lord rebuke you. You accuse me of bitterness and sin for calling out the lies of some teachers? The title says SOME. I chose my words carefully.
