In this sermon, I reveal five reasons marriages fail from a biblical perspective.

A failed marriage doesn’t mean it ends in divorce. Many couples stay together for social appearances, children, or other reasons but tolerate dissatisfaction, un-fulfillment and pain. A failed marriage is like a car that doesn’t move—you still have one—but it doesn’t fulfill its purpose.

Here are the five reasons marriages fail:

1. A lack of agape love

Since God created marriage, it’s only natural that His agape love be necessary to substain a successful marriage. God’s love is not based in feelings but moral behavior and treatment of others (1 Corinthians 13:4-7). Finally, one can only have God’s love if they have been “reborn” with the power of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).

2. Cultural lies

Sexual repression and gynocentrism is a ploy of Satan to destroy families by getting the sexes to go against their biologiical nature. In the end, marriages fail when men and women try to live contrary to their design. Gynocentrism emphasizes women over men, distorts God’s assigned gender roles, masculinizes women, and feminizes men. Forced monogamy, romance, equality, and feminism are ideologies associated with this destructive social engineering.

3. One spouse is an unbeliever

The Scriptures are clear that we should not fellowship with unbelievers (2 Corinthians 6:14), and certainly not marry them. But what happens when a person is converted after their marriage? The Bible gives instructions on what to do (1 Peter 3:1-7, 1 Corinthians 7:12-16), but a spouse who hates God, while married to a spouse who loves the Lord will have conflict in their marriage.

4. Narcissism

The Bible says in the latter days, “men will be lovers of themselves rather than lovers of God” (2 Timothy 3:1-9). When a person doesn’t love the Lord, they tend to treat others like tools and objects rather than the higher beings made in the image of God. Extreme selfishness, pride, arrogance, and the controlling tendencies that accompany narcissistic personality disorder will drive a marriage into the ground. A narcissist cannot be a child of God even if they claim to be so.

5. Unresolved personal problems

Many people come into marriage with addictions, false entitlement, insecurities, wounds, beliefs about life that are not true, and destructive ways of coping with life. While Christ is the solution to their problems, many people have not accepted that they have a problem nor do they feel God can change them for the better. People with these kinds of mindsets will always cause problems within their marriage.

Next, in this series, I will give biblical solutions with the purpose of helping salvage and revitalize failed marriages.
