Chapter 3: The Sin Nature

Home Books Pride is the Problem

Now that we know how the pride of Satan infected mankind, we can understand the reasons behind our actions. After the Fall, all children born of the line of Adam would have this nature of Satan; this is why the scriptures say:

Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me (Psalms 51:5). All have sinned, and come short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23).

As by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned (Romans 5:12).

This sinful nature (pride, the god complex) produced three common problems for everyone born of Adam: a void, rebellion and disorder.

1. The void is that empty place in every person’s soul God would usually occupy, but because of rebellion, mankind tries to fill with everything else; this is where the sins of selfishness and idolatry come from.

2. Rebellion is the act of resisting authority, control, or convention. Humans naturally rebel against the Creator and want nothing to do with him; just like Satan. This is why the scriptures say:

10 as it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: 11 there is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. 12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. (Romans 3:10-12)

3. Disorder is a malfunction of original design. Satan, having detached from God was filled with everything opposite of God and became disorderly—he’s confused. Likewise we’re filled with every disorder there is—just waiting to be expressed.

I like the Mayo Clinic’s definition of personality disorder:

A personality disorder is a type of mental disorder in which you have a rigid and unhealthy pattern of thinking, functioning and behaving. A person with a personality disorder has trouble perceiving and relating to situations and to people. This causes significant problems and limitations in relationships, social encounters, work and school.

All personality disorders are simply expressions of Satan’s nature within. The book of Galatians states just a few of these disorders:

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God (Galatians 5:19-21)

Selfishness is the root?

For as long as I can remember, I’ve heard Bible teachers say the root of all sin is selfishness. They even came up with clever wordplay saying SIN is short for Self-Ish-Ness. Selfishness is definitely at the core (because of the void), but we have to go deeper and ask why we’re so selfish?

Selfishness is merely a symptom of the root cause. If a person didn’t have a god complex, they wouldn’t be needy. Selfishness is becoming consumed with one’s own needs having nothing themselves because they’re disconnected from the Supplier of all things. So, if people weren’t proud, they wouldn’t be selfish.

To recap: Pride is Satan’s nature, which is what I call the god complex: a perverted belief that one doesn’t need the Most High. With this idea, people are born detached from God with a void in their soul, with a natural tendency to be rebellious, and disorderly. What a way to be born! But thank God for his plan of salvation.
