We see later as the earth began to populate that something terrible happened. Angels and women began to have sexual relations producing hybrid children. Genesis chapter six gives us the details.
First, it’s important to note that before Jesus’ death and resurrection, biblically, humans were referred to as “sons of men,” and angelic servants were called “sons of God.” It was only until after Jesus’ ascension, and the New Testament, that men could become, and were called, “sons of God,” through the rebirth of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:14).
We also have other evidence of this when we study the book of Job when it says, “Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them” (Job 1:6). This was a heavenly meeting between God and his angelic beings, not humans. Therefore, the sons of God are angelic beings; this is vital to understand as we read Genesis 6:
1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, 2 that the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose (Gen 6:1-2).
There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown (Genesis 6:4).
These angels obviously did something forbidden. They entertained the thought of being with the beautiful women of Earth and decided to marry and have families; this was totally out of order. As far as we know, their job was to watch and protect humanity, but they rebelled.
I believe these were the angels that didn’t “keep their first estate,” as mentioned in Jude 1:6. And when beings are disorderly and misbehaving, you can bet Satan is behind it. He’s the author of disorder and perversion. It’s mentioned in Revelation 12:3-4 that Satan took with him one-third of God’s angels (or stars, as they are referred to in the verse; and Satan is also called a star in several passages of scripture Isaiah 14:12; Revelation 9:1).
I believe Lucifer inspired some of his angels to copulate with women to further pollute the genetics of humanity so that the child God prophesied would destroy him, couldn’t come forward (Genesis 3:15).
Satan’s nature was already in every human being from birth, but men also possessed a moral sense; this sense was the remaining essence of God. Lucifer didn’t realize the conscience of God would maintain.
With knowing right and wrong, and possessing free will, humans could still choose to do good instead of evil, and be accepted by God. On the other hand, Satan was utterly corrupt, his soul was full of darkness, and so were his angels; they have no redemption. Therefore, if all the children of the earth were human/angelic hybrids, they’d have no redemption either. And so we see the goal of his plan:
5 And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. 7 And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them. 8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. (Genesis 6:5-8)
Every thought of their minds was continually evil. Wow. They were entirely consumed with darkness; this shows there was no redemption for these people.
But it doesn’t just say the people were corrupted; it mentions the animals, insects, birds—everything else was too. How could that be? What were they doing to the rest of creation? Probably genetic modifications as well.
While the text doesn’t state it, bestiality was probably going on, and if giants were the result of women with angels, what kind of creatures could an angel produce with animals! Now the mythological creatures of legend make sense.
After watching what happened, God was very sorry he made man. I can see his face and his heart. His perfect creation totally ruined. A masterpiece destroyed by his ruthless adversary. God was sorrier for the souls than for his artwork because, as we know, eternal torment awaits them.
I bet Satan was happy. I bet he thought he’d really hurt God. But Noah stood out. He’d kept his genetics clean from the angelic DNA. That meant he didn’t marry any woman who was the offspring of these fallen angels. This is not to say that his sons’ wives didn’t have some strands of angelic genes in their DNA because we see after the flood giants were among the people again.
Noah and his family made a choice to stay away from the wicked people of the earth. Now think about that; this was everybody! Imagine the whole world is evil and you’re the only one that says, “Nah, I’m not doing that.” This man was unique, and so God chose him to replenish the earth after he destroyed everything with the great flood (Genesis 6:9-7:1).
What does this have to do with pride? Well, it’s just another example of how pride will spread. The idea that one can be his/her own god is attractive so much so that one-third of God’s innumerable angels got on board, leading some of them to have intercourse with women. And what was the result: offspring full of wickedness and violence. There can only be one god. Multiple gods = chaos; this is all God is been trying to tell people. Thankfully, two-thirds of the angels didn’t go for it; and thank God, Noah didn’t either, or God would’ve had to start all over again.
The Tower of Babel
So the earth is being populated again. “Things” have “died” down, literally. The horrors and chaos of the first world have been drowned. Peace is back and fresh people walk the earth from the family of Noah. But of course, the nature of Satan, pride, the god complex, was still active in the souls of mankind. Genesis 11:1-9 gives us the account of a city that became known as Babel:
1 And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. 2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. 3 And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter. 4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. (Genesis 11:1-4)
So the god nature says, “Let’s build for ourselves a great tower that reaches the heavens. Let’s exalt ourselves to the heights of God!” Sounds like Lucifer, doesn’t it? Pride seeks to lift itself up even as a collective. The real God sits high above all, therefore, false gods try to do the same.
The last part of verse four gives another motive behind the construction of the tower. It says, “unless we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.” In the Garden, God told Adam and Eve to be fruitful, multiply and fill the earth, after the flood, Noah and his family were told the same.
Certainly, this command was passed down to this new generation. Why did they rebel? Because false gods simply don’t do what they’re told. Pride always thinks it knows better. God made this massive earth for everyone to play on and these people wanted to crowd together in one place.
5 And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. 6 And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. (Genesis 11:5-6)
I can see God’s reasoning behind the command to spread across the earth. A sinful one world government, unity, and one common language would rapidly corrupt the souls of the people, requiring another worldwide extermination as before. God was trying to protect his creation from themselves, but like stubborn children, they didn’t obey. So God moved:
7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech. 8 So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. 9 Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth. (Genesis 11:7-9)
So we see where 6,500 languages came from. In God’s wisdom, he created language barriers to prevent the worldwide escalation of sin. Now the growth of sin would be isolated and he would only have to destroy separate nations instead of the whole world.
But there is one unique thing about pride. Usually, pride causes strife, divisions, and wars because everyone is trying to be their own god. The only time the proud of the whole earth unite is when it’s against God. So when you see this happening, be very sure the agenda is to oppose the Creator. Revelation talks about this:
For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. (Revelation 16:14)
Mankind will, once again, in his arrogance, and hatred of God, having the very nature of Satan, unify to attempt to battle God. But the scriptures speak to this:
1 Why are the nations so angry? Why do they waste their time with futile plans? 2 The kings of the earth prepare for battle; the rulers plot together against the LORD and against his anointed one. 3 “Let us break their chains,” they cry, “and free ourselves from slavery to God.” 4 But the one who rules in heaven laughs. The Lord scoffs at them. 5 Then in anger he rebukes them, terrifying them with his fierce fury. 6 For the Lord declares, “I have placed my chosen king on the throne in Jerusalem, and on my holy mountain.” (Psalm 2:1-6 NLT).
The children of Satan are no match for the Almighty God, their plans to war against him are comical. Notice how the proud view the laws designed to protect and preserve mankind as bondage and slavery to God! In the end, this attitude will be destroyed.
