God’s desire is to expand his kingdom through the gifts, talents, and abilities he’s invested in us.
With any business, one of its goals is to grow its revenue. One way to grow is by making wise investments.
The kingdom of God is a business and the Church is God’s investment. He bought us with his son’s precious blood (Gal 3:13-15); and he wants a return on that investment. A return would be the strengthening and expansion of his kingdom.
I believe the parable of the “Three Servants” (or “The Talents”) found in Matthew 25:14-30 is an indication of God’s will to grow his kingdom using the gifts he’s invested in us.
When we become a “new creation,” we individually receive supernatural abilities under three categories: administrations, gifts, and operations.
Because we know God wants a return on his investment, it’s important to discover the abilities he’s placed in us and learn how to use them.
The gifts of the triune God
1 Corinthians 12:4-6 reveals that each member of the Godhead distributes abilities to us:
9 gifts come from the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12: 8-10):
- Faith
- Wisdom
- Knowledge
- Miracles
- Discerning of spirits
- Healing
- Tongues
- Interpretation of tongues
- Prophecy
7 operational gifts come from the Father (Romans 12:6-8):
- Prophecy
- Ministry (service)
- Teaching
- Exhortation (encouragement)
- Giving
- Leadership (ruling)
- Mercy (kindness)
5 administrative gifts come from the Christ (Ephesians 4:11-):
- Apostles
- Prophets
- Evangelists
- Pastors
- Teachers
Discovering your calling through your gifts
You can begin to understand your calling by studying scripture, renewing your mind, and asking yourself:
- What gift(s) do I have?
- What motivates me the most in life?
- What do I enjoy doing the most?
- What’s my burden for the world or the Church?
Ask the Holy Spirit to confirm your findings. You’ll find that your spiritual gift moves you, you can’t help but “operate in it,” and you’ll have peace and joy when you use it.
A woman’s call to ministry
Excluding the administrative gifts like pastoring, women of God have received spiritual abilities as well. Examples in scripture reveal that some had the gift of prophecy.
However, a woman’s gifts don’t trump her first purpose to aid her husband. Women were created to help their husbands. If a woman is of age to be married and she has not been called to be single (Matthew 19:12), her first purpose is to help her husband fulfill the will of God.
If her husband isn’t a child of God, her purpose remains the same and she should showcase the love of God by being the best wife she can be so that her husband might be saved through her life (1 Peter 3:1-2).
